Labuhan ceremony is held to celebrate the birth of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono. “Labuh” means 'throwing something sacred in a river or the sea in Javanese language. The offering from the Yogyakarta palace (Kraton) consists of food, cuttings of fingernails, and hair of the Sultan. Then the offering will be thrown away into the South Sea, or geographically recognised as Indian Ocean. The offering is intends to be presented to the goddess of the South Sea, Kanjeng Ratu Kidul. By performing this symbolic-ceremony, the Sultan and the people of Yogyakarta hoping to get their welfare increased. The same ceremony is also held on the top of mount Merapi and Lawu.
